This ink illustration is part of a series called "Artifice, Ingenuity and Mental Beauty," named for the symbolism of the clematis flower. The inspiration for these pieces came from photos of a beautiful purple clematis taken on my daily walk, and are all drawn using India ink on Opalux vellum presented in a black frame with white mat.
The symbolism of mental beauty attributed to the clematis can be traced back to various cultures where the flower was often seen as a representation of creativity and intellectual prowess. The intricate structure of its blooms, with delicate petals and a striking center, mirrors the complexity and beauty of human thought. In the Victorian era, exchanging flowers with specific meanings was a popular practice, and Clematis was often given to convey admiration for someone's intellect or inventive nature.
